Try before you buy a narrowboat

  • What’s the aim of the experienceGuests aboard Pendelvin Gypsy will gain a realistic experience of life on a narrowboat, provided by our high-specification liveaboard narrowboat, Pendelvin Gypsy. Our goal is to provide you with an authentic experience of life on a narrowboat, both within the marina itself and out on the network. This allows you to gain a comprehensive understanding of canal living, helping you decide which lifestyle balance best suits your preferences and needs.
  • What can we expect to learn Understanding what it's like to live on a narrowboat needs real experience, not just a holiday. That's why our program gives you a hands-on experience tailored to these living conditions. One important part of this experience is checking different heating systems. Pendelvin has three types of heating, so guests can see how well each works in different situations. Additionally, the management of electrical power is a vital consideration. While power requirements are less demanding when moored at the marina, off-grid situations necessitate careful planning and resource management. Overall, this experience aims to provide a thorough understanding of the operational challenges and solutions associated with narrowboat living in winter conditions. It emphasizes practical skills, onboard system evaluation, and resource management, equipping participants with the knowledge necessary for safe and comfortable off-grid navigation and habitation.
  • Time of Year  We offer packages all year round, but winter seems to be the favourite time of year with guests, as it really tests the boats systems and the guest’s ability to cope with bad weather & short hours of daylight.
  • Experience LocationGuests are provided with the opportunity to enjoy their stay at Aston Marina in Stone, with the flexibility to explore the surrounding waterways. Many people prefer to spend several nights moored at the marina, taking advantage of the comprehensive amenities and comforts available. Guests often choose to venture onto the network for an off-grid skippered experience, either centrally located within Stone or in a more secluded, remote area.
  • Marina FacilitiesAston Marina offers an exceptional mooring experience, providing guests with convenient access to shore power and freshwater facilities located just a few feet from the boat. The mooring location places it within walking distance of the renowned No.26 Restaurant, which features a cozy bar and an enticing menu, enhancing the overall experience for visitors. This combination of premium amenities and nearby dining options makes Aston Marina an ideal choice for boat owners seeking both comfort and convenience.
  • CanalScapes Involvement (Marina)Upon arrival at the marina, our team representative will provide a comprehensive tour of the vessel and its systems, ensuring you are familiar with all operational aspects. We will then hand over the keys, allowing you to enjoy your experience independently. Rest assured, we remain accessible via WhatsApp or visits for any assistance or inquiries that may arise during your time on board.
  • CanalScapes Involvement (Cruising)During network navigation, our experienced skipper will operate the vessel, demonstrating essential procedures such as safely managing lock passages, mooring techniques, and turning at winding holes. In the evening, after securing the boat, the skipper will depart, allowing guests to enjoy a tranquil and isolated experience. This approach ensures safety, professionalism, and an opportunity for guests to fully appreciate the serenity of the environment without direct supervision.
  • How many people – Pendelvin Gypsy can accommodate up to 4 people in various sleeping configurations.
  • Pets – Your furry friends are permitted. We just ask they are friendly, as your skipper will occasionally need to enter the boat.
  • CostThe pricing structure varies depending on the location and type of activity. For marina-based activities, rates begin at £200 per night for up to four guests. Additional charges apply for skipper services, with a fee of £50 for a half-day and £100 for a full day. These rates are designed to accommodate different client needs, whether stationary at the marina or engaged in cruising activities out on the network.

Disclaimer: Aston Marina has a strict no residential mooring policy, with a maximum of 120 days stay a year. Therefore, you are able to sample life aboard a boat with CanalScapes but would not be able to do so full time at Aston. Other marinas in the area do offer such a facility.

CanalScapes are not an approved RYA training center, but we do offer clients a familiarity experience of operating a narrowboat and life onboard.

Matt & Julie - Try Before you Buy Experience

"We contacted CanalScapes, and Mark and Deb were responsive and supportive of our needs – two adults and two cats to live on a boat for three weeks please! Prior to booking, Mark invited us down to the marina to view the CanalScapes flagship, Pendelvin Gypsy. She is a 62ft traditional style narrowboat with a beautiful and cosy interior, an engine room and a boatman’s cabin. We can’t thank Mark enough for his time on that cold and drizzly day to show us the boat and give us a tour of the marina. Mark is a boater and his enthusiasm for life on the canals is obvious, and infectious.

The mission of CanalScapes is to offer experiences of canal life to others and allow them to develop their own love for the inland waterways.

We have learned so much about living on a boat, and about ourselves and we are grateful for the try before you buy experience that CanalScapes has given us. Coupled with great customer service, a beautiful boat and the enthusiastic and supporting owners (Mark and Deb), the CanalScapes experience is a winning combination."

Matt and Julie have been so kind to write a case study about their stay with CanalScapes. It makes an excellent read with some practical lessons learnt about their experiences. Some good, some not so good.

Its a lengthy read (3000 words!) but we think invaluable for people wanting to venture into canal-life. Whether it be to live-a-board, recreational or share-boat. Grab yourself a brew and read-on......
